TONY INCENZO: Not bad for a bag of balls!

Tony INCENZO
TALKING POINTS

LOOKING back on a glittering career where he won six England international caps marauding down the left wing for the likes of Manchester United, Gordon Hill believes it all became possible due to his humble upbringing in Non-League circles.
Hill also played professionally for Millwall, Derby County and Queens Park Rangers plus several overseas teams. Nevertheless it was Southall FC who set him on his way.
Currently aged 70 and living in gthe USA, near Seattle, Hill joined me on Zoom to discuss those early days. He began by recalling a modest path into football.

  1. Hi ya me old mate. Not been able to get hold of you since last time I saw you I’ve been wondering how your knee operation went??? It was so good to see you at Staines v Millwall really miss the old days of Laytons Lane with your Mum&Dad Brothers and Sisters and the days with John Moyle great man that he was. I did send you a friends request on Facebook but I’m guessing you don’t go on it much

  2. Nice article. I was good friends with Gordon back in the mid 80’s. My wife & I ran a busy newsagents in Macclesfield, & ‘Hilly’ was a regular customer. We got on very well even though I’m a Scouser & a Liverpool supporter. Being a keen footballer myself, Gordon would often bring me to Northwich Victoria to take part in their training sessions, which I really enjoyed. We lost touch when we moved away from the area, but I heard he was managing Chester City back at the turn of the century (2001) so I was able to meet up with him again, taking my 11 year old son with me. Gordon is a terrific, down to earth bloke. I remember he had his 6 England caps displayed proudly in a glass frame when you walked into his hall. He also had/has a good sense of humour. In the lead up to Christmas one year he kept teasing me saying he’d bought me a Christmas present that I was going to love. He kept this up for weeks, until eventually the big day arrived & he handed me the ‘present’ which was all wrapped up with Christmas paper & a nice red bow. I quickly, & excitedly, tore off the wrapping paper to find he’d bought me a video of the 1977 FA Cup final. My face was a picture, & you could have heard his laughter all the way to Old Trafford.
